BACKSTORY It seems that WINDMOGUL controlled the wind from the very beginning! He kept it howling across the planets for what must have been trillions of years. As long as he kept the planets desolate and barren, he felt there would never be anybody or anything to challenge his power. After a very long time, Windmogul decided that he needed some help. He reached into the deepest black hole he could find in the galaxy and pulled out a few hundred colorless, worm-like caterpillars. He showed them how to swell up like giant balloons and blow great bursts of air out their mouths. Windmogul called them SLUGLETTS. One day, he'd order a great herd of the Slugletts to blow freezing cold air at the top of a planet. The next day, he'd have them blow hot air at the bottom of a planet. No plants or trees or animals or even humans could ever live on such barren, windswept places --- and who would even want to? As the years passed, Windmogul gradually turned more and more of his wind-blowing duties over to the Slugletts. He got lazier and lazier. Finally, all he was doing was filling out work orders and sending the Slugletts off to do his work while he lolled around. He got so lazy he even stopped going out to check on the Slugletts. And the Slugletts really didn't need to be checked on. They always did what they were told and did a good job of it. They would go, as ordered, from planet to planet, blowing and stirring up great winds. One day, a herd of Slugletts was hard at work when one of them saw something very unusual way off in the corner of the galaxy. On closer examination, they discovered a beautiful new planet. Its oceans made it sparkle like a blue jewel. It had patches of rich green and was surrounded by puffy, white clouds. As they were returning home from their day's work, one of the Slugletts said, "You know, the new planet is so beautiful it would be a shame to tell Windmogul about it." What an astounding thought! Another Sluglett said, "You're right! There's no rule that says we have to tell him. Let's just keep it for our very own secret." They all agreed. They knew that if they told Windmogul, he would just order them to blow on the beautiful planet until the white clouds were gone, those green plants had all turned brown and died, and the blue ocean had frozen solid to an ugly, icy white. It would end up just like all the other planets. And, since he'd gotten so lazy and never checked the galaxy anymore, he'd probably never be the wiser. |
